How to Generate a Backup - Plesk

While we do generate daily back ups of your account, the Windows Plesk control panel allows you to generate backups for data redundancy. This article will cover how to generate and delete backups in Plesk:

Generating a Backup

  1. Log into your Plesk Control Panel.
  2. Click Website & Domains.
  3. Click Backup Manager located on the upper right corner.
  4. Click Back Up under Backup Manager.
  5. Select the following in your Backup content:
    • Back up: You can choose to backup the website data and/or email.  By default, both checkboxes are selected which is recommended
    • Type:
      • Full: This setting will backup all data regardless of when the last backup is generated
      • Incremental: This setting will only backup data that is added/modified since the backup
    • Comments: This text field is provided so that you can add additional comments regarding the backup for reference
    • When a backup task is completed...: Select this checkbox if you wish to receive a notification once the backup is completed
    • Suspend the domain until the backup task is completed: This setting will redirect visitors to a custom 503 error page until the backup is completed
    • Use native MS SQL backup functionality if possible: You only need this setting if one of your websites has a MS SQL database.
  6. Click OK.

Scheduled Backups

To generate automatic backups in Windows Plesk:

  1. Log into your Plesk Control Panel.
  2. Click Website & Domains.
  3. Click Backup Manager located on the upper right corner.
  4. Click Schedule under Backup Manager.
  5. Schedule:
    • Activate this backup task: This setting turns the scheduled back up on or off
    • Run this backup task: This setting specifies when you want to run the backups
    • Use incremental backup: This setting will only backup data that is added/modified since the last full backup
    • Perform full backup: This setting specifies when you want to perform full backups, and this setting is only available if you have incremental backups enabled
    • Keep backup files for: This setting specifies how long backups are kept on the server before they are deleted
    • Back up: You can choose to backup the website data and/or email
    • If errors occurs during the execution of this backup task...: This setting will send a notification to a specified email if an error occurs during backup
    • Suspend the domain until the backup task is completed: This setting will redirect visitors to a custom 503 error page until the backup is completed
    • Use native MS SQL backup functionality if possible: You only need this setting is one of your websites has a MS SQL database.
  6. Click OK.

Deleting Backups

  1. Log into your Plesk Control Panel.
  2. Click Website & Domains.
  3. Click Backup Manager located on the upper right corner.
  4. Select the checkbox for the backup(s) you want to delete.
  5. Click Remove.
